Defensible space rules
County Code Chapter 7A declares weeds in the unincorporated county a seasonal nuisance. Before the plow-down date set each year by the county fire chiefs association, owners of improved lots must cut weeds taller than 3 inches in a 50-foot strip around every structure (homes, businesses, sheds, detached garages, greenhouses and fences), or up to the property line if closer; owners of vacant lots next to a building must clear enough to give that building 50 feet of clearance. Weeds may be disced, mowed, plowed or cut, but not burned. The local fire district mails notices 21 days before the deadline. Missing the deadline is an infraction with a fine of up to $50, and the district may clear the lot and bill the cost plus an administrative fee; unpaid bills become a special assessment and lien on the property tax bill.

Frequently asked questions 5
Who enforces weed and fire hazard rules in Colusa County?

Under County Code Chapter 7A, the county fire district for your area (or its designee) sends plow-down notices, inspects, and can abate uncleared lots. Inspections can be delegated to volunteer fire organizations.

How much do I have to clear?

Cut all weeds over 3 inches high in a 50-foot strip around every structure on an improved lot, or to the property line if closer. A vacant lot next to a building must be cleared enough to give that building 50 feet of clearance. Burning is not an allowed method.

What happens if I miss the plow-down date?

It is an infraction with a fine of up to $50. The fire district can hire a contractor to clear the weeds and bill you for the cost plus an administrative fee; you can pay within 10 days or request a Board of Supervisors hearing, and unpaid costs become a lien on your property tax bill.

When is the plow-down date?

The county fire chiefs association sets it each year based on soil and weather conditions. Your fire district mails a notice 21 days before the date and publishes it in a local newspaper at least 15 days ahead.

Is there a fire safe council for Colusa County?

The county's 2021 Community Wildfire Protection Plan says Colusa County members, including the Colusa County RCD, take part in the Tehama-Glenn Fire Safe Council, and that residents and agencies were interested in forming a Colusa or Glenn/Colusa council. The Tehama-Glenn council meets quarterly, alternating between Tehama and Glenn counties.
