Defensible space rules
Public Resources Code 4291 requires 100 feet of defensible space (or to the property line) around buildings on or next to wildland. CAL FIRE's standards break this into Zone 0 (the first 5 feet, kept free of combustible mulch, dead plants and debris), Zone 1 (within 30 feet: remove dead plants, grass, weeds, leaves and needles, and keep tree branches 10 feet from other trees) and Zone 2 (30 to 100 feet: mow annual grass to 4 inches, space shrubs and trees, and keep 10 feet of bare-soil clearance around wood piles and propane tanks). Branches must be at least 10 feet from chimneys. CAL FIRE and its partners inspect in the State Responsibility Area.

Local rules and deadlines

For homes near grass, brush or forest, the standard is CAL FIRE’s defensible space rules under Public Resources Code 4291: 100 feet of fuel reduction, or to the property line. Keep the first 5 feet ember-resistant, clear dead plants and needles within 30 feet, and from 30 to 100 feet mow grass to 4 inches and space shrubs and trees. Keep branches 10 feet from chimneys and 10 feet of bare soil around wood piles and propane tanks. CAL FIRE and its partners inspect in the State Responsibility Area.

Free chipping and fire-safe programs

The Glenn County RCD runs grant-funded fuel-reduction work, including fuel breaks along County Road 306 and Highway 162 and the 121-acre Stony Gorge project above Elk Creek. The 2023 CWPP proposes a chipping and defensible space assistance program for elderly, disabled and low-income owners.
