Humboldt County Code Title III, Division 11 (Fire Safe Regulations) sets the basic wildfire standards for State Responsibility Area land and applies mainly to new construction, subdivisions and permits. On parcels of one acre or more, buildings must be set back at least 30 feet from property lines and road centerlines; approvals must include a way to keep defensible space maintained every year, such as CC&Rs or a recorded Notice of Requirement for Maintenance. Violations are misdemeanors, and development kept in violation can be abated as a public nuisance. For existing homes, the county points owners to CWUIC § 604.1 and PRC 4291: anyone who owns a building on or next to land covered with flammable material must maintain 100 feet of defensible space on every side.

More
Humboldt County has no separate countywide weed-abatement ordinance for existing homes: owners of buildings next to flammable land must keep 100 feet of defensible space under the California Wildland-Urban Interface Code and state law PRC 4291, and CAL FIRE's Humboldt-Del Norte Unit inspects in the State Responsibility Area. The county's own Fire Safe Regulations (Title III, Division 11) add setback and maintenance rules for new development. In June 2025 the Board of Supervisors adopted the State Fire Marshal's new Moderate, High and Very High zones for unincorporated local areas. Contractors below are ranked by public Google rating.

Defensible space rules in Humboldt County
Fire hazard zones in Humboldt County
On June 24, 2025 the Board of Supervisors adopted the State Fire Marshal’s 2025 Local Responsibility Area zones, and the map is now written into County Code § 3111-14 as Moderate, High and Very High zones. State Responsibility Area covers rural, forested and grassy land, and the county’s wildfire hazard page says that building in the SRA generally puts you in a wildfire hazard area. To check a parcel, use CAL FIRE’s FHSZ Viewer or turn on the Fire Hazard Severity and CAL FIRE SRA layers in the county WebGIS.
Local rules and deadlines
For existing homes the standard is state law. Under CWUIC § 604.1 and PRC 4291, anyone who owns a building on or next to land covered with flammable material must keep 100 feet of defensible space on all sides. The county’s Fire Safe Regulations cover new development in the SRA: road access, address signs, water supply, a 30-foot building setback on parcels of an acre or more, and a recorded plan to keep defensible space maintained every year. Violations are misdemeanors and can be abated as a public nuisance. High and Very High zones also trigger Chapter 7A wildfire-resistant construction on new work.
Free chipping and fire-safe programs
The Humboldt County Fire Safe Council coordinates with seven local fire safe councils, such as the Southern Humboldt Fire Safe Council, which fund and carry out fuel-reduction projects and Firewise planning in their communities. The county council also keeps a contractor finder for defensible space and road-clearing work.

Frequently asked questions 5
Who enforces defensible space rules in Humboldt County?
In the State Responsibility Area, CAL FIRE's Humboldt-Del Norte Unit enforces state defensible space law, and the county's Fire Safety Resources page links to CAL FIRE's form for requesting an inspection. Humboldt County Planning and Building applies the county Fire Safe Regulations when you build, subdivide or get a permit.
How wide does my defensible space have to be?
100 feet from each side and from the front and rear of a structure, when the building is on or next to land covered with flammable material (CWUIC § 604.1 and PRC 4291). For new buildings on parcels of an acre or more, the county also requires a 30-foot setback from property lines and road centerlines.
What happens if I violate the county Fire Safe Regulations?
Violating Division 11 is a misdemeanor under the county code, and any new development operated or maintained contrary to it is a public nuisance that the county can seek to stop and abate.
Am I in a fire hazard severity zone?
The county adopted the State Fire Marshal's February 2025 LRA zone map on June 24, 2025. Look up your address in CAL FIRE's FHSZ Viewer, or open the county WebGIS and turn on the Fire Hazard Severity and CAL FIRE SRA layers under Hazards > Fire. If you are building in the SRA, you are generally in a wildfire hazard area.
Where can I find help with vegetation work?
The Humboldt County Fire Safe Council keeps a searchable list of vegetation management contractors (without endorsing them), and seven local fire safe councils, including Southern Humboldt, Willow Creek and Orleans/Somes Bar, run fuel-reduction projects in their areas.
