Fire hazard zones after the 2025 remap

Sonoma County’s fire hazard picture changed substantially when CAL FIRE released updated Local Responsibility Area maps in early 2025. Unincorporated county land went from 11 acres of Very High severity zone to 7,555 acres, and gained 9,149 acres of newly mapped High-hazard zone that didn’t exist under the older maps. Santa Rosa’s pattern was different: its Very High zone shrank from 1,644 to 475 acres, but the city picked up 3,081 acres of new High-hazard designation, much of it in and around neighborhoods rebuilt after the 2017 Tubbs Fire and areas affected by the 2020 Glass Fire. Local rules and inspection deadlines

Sonoma County enforces its own vegetation management ordinance (County Code Chapter 13A / Ordinance 6148) on top of state law, requiring defensible space to 100 feet from structures and 10 feet from roads and driveways. Permit Sonoma’s Fire Prevention Division, working with local fire districts, runs upward of 4,000 defensible space inspections a year in the highest-risk areas, generally starting in late spring. Zone 1 (0-30 feet from a structure) requires clearing dead vegetation, pruning tree limbs to 6 feet off the ground, and keeping roofs and gutters free of needles and leaves; Zone 2 (30-100 feet) has lighter but still mandatory fuel-reduction rules that scale with slope and vegetation type. A failed inspection starts a 30-day clock to fix problems before re-inspection, with further deadlines and cost-recovery fees if the property still isn’t compliant after that.

Free chipping and grant programs

The county’s Residential Curbside Chipper Program gives unincorporated-area homeowners free chipping for defensible-space debris — piles up to 50 feet long, 3 feet tall, and 10 feet wide (deep). The 2026 program is zone-based, so check the county zones map for your area’s schedule, then reserve a slot at chipperday.com after confirming your brush pile meets the size and material rules (freshly cut limbs, 1-4 inches thick and up to 10 feet long, no construction wood or root balls). In West County, Fire Safe Sonoma runs a separate CAL FIRE grant-funded chipper program covering Camp Meeker, Forestville, Occidental, and Monte Rio.
