County Code Chapter 8.68 (Vegetation Management Ordinance, Ord. 1300, 2006) declares a public nuisance: dry grass or other flammable vegetation within 100 feet of an occupied structure (matching PRC 4291), flammable vegetation within 30 feet of an above-ground fuel or propane tank, hazardous dead or dying trees, and fuel concentrations over 20 tons per acre. After a Notice to Abate Hazard, the owner has 30 days to comply or 30 days to appeal to the Board of Supervisors. The county can hire contractors to do the work and add the cost plus an administrative fee to the property tax bill. A violation is a misdemeanor punishable by up to $500 and/or six months in jail. Separately, Chapter 8.30 (Fire Safe Ordinance) requires new buildings on parcels of 1 acre or more to be set back at least 30 feet from property lines.

Fire hazard zones in Trinity County
Homes in Trinity County’s State Responsibility Area are rated on CAL FIRE’s SRA hazard map, in effect since April 1, 2024, which grades land as Moderate, High, or Very High. The State Fire Marshal also released new Local Responsibility Area maps in 2025. Look up your parcel on CAL FIRE’s FHSZ viewer. The county falls under CAL FIRE’s Shasta-Trinity Unit.
Local rules and deadlines
Trinity has its own teeth on top of PRC 4291. The county’s Vegetation Management Ordinance declares a nuisance for flammable vegetation within 100 feet of an occupied structure or within 30 feet of an above-ground fuel tank, plus hazardous dead trees and fuel loads over 20 tons per acre. After a Notice to Abate Hazard, you have 30 days to comply or appeal to the Board of Supervisors. If you do neither, the county can clear the land and bill the cost through property taxes, and the violation itself is a misdemeanor (up to $500 and/or six months). For new construction, the Fire Safe Ordinance requires a 30-foot building setback from property lines on parcels of 1 acre or more.
Free chipping and fire-safe programs

Frequently asked questions 4
Who enforces defensible space in Trinity County?
State law (PRC 4291) applies in the State Responsibility Area, which CAL FIRE's Shasta-Trinity Unit covers. The county also has its own Vegetation Management Ordinance (Chapter 8.68): the Board of Supervisors' designee can post a Notice to Abate Hazard on any property with flammable vegetation within 100 feet of an occupied structure.
What happens if I don't clear my property after a notice?
You have 30 days to clear the hazard, or 30 days to appeal in writing to the Board of Supervisors. If you do neither, the county can have private contractors do the work and add the cost plus an administrative fee to your property tax bill. Allowing the nuisance is also a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500, up to six months in jail, or both.
How wide does my defensible space have to be?
100 feet around any occupied structure, or to the property line if that's closer, under PRC 4291 and County Code 8.68. You also need 30 feet of clearance around above-ground flammable liquid or propane tanks. New buildings on parcels of 1 acre or more must sit at least 30 feet from property lines under the county's Fire Safe Ordinance.
Is chipping free in Trinity County?
Yes, on community chipping days. The Trinity County RCD runs free chipping in North and West County, and The Watershed Center covers Hayfork and South County. Sign up through the RCD's chipping request form before the scheduled days.
