Defensible space rules
County Code Sections 3-3.02 to 3-3.05 apply to anyone who owns or occupies a building on or next to mountainous, forest, brush or grass-covered land in the unincorporated county. Owners must clear all flammable vegetation within at least 30 feet of the structure (or to the property line), remove brush and combustible growth from 30 to 100 feet (or farther if an official finds extra-hazardous conditions), cut back any tree within 10 feet of a chimney or stovepipe outlet, keep overhanging trees free of dead wood, and keep roofs clear of leaves and needles. Beyond 30 feet, grass under 18 inches can stay to hold soil. Peace officers, CAL FIRE, U.S. Forest Service officers and fire or utility district officers may enforce the chapter; it does not list a specific fine.
