Defensible space rules in Inyo County

Fire hazard zones in Inyo County

The State Fire Marshal updated Inyo County’s hazard maps on March 24, 2025, and state law gave the county 120 days to adopt the Local Responsibility Area zones. The Ready Inyo wildfire page explains that the new maps use fire history, vegetation, terrain, wind and ember travel, and that homes in a Very High zone face stricter defensible space rules. At its July 22, 2025 meeting the Board of Supervisors waived reading of the adopting ordinance and scheduled approval for August 5; county staff noted the zones mainly shape defensible space duties and future building rules, not insurance eligibility. Local rules and deadlines

Under County Code Section 14.08.140, every unincorporated area is a Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Area. Owners must keep a 30-foot firebreak of cleared flammable vegetation around occupied structures and a reduced fuel zone out to 100 feet, trim branches 10 feet back from chimney outlets, keep roofs free of needles and leaves, and clear brush within 10 feet of propane tanks. The building official can issue citations, and each day a violation continues can bring a misdemeanor fine of up to $500.

Free chipping and fire-safe programs

In December 2025 the county reported a CAL FIRE grant that includes $119,000 for fuel-reduction vouchers at county landfills, and a $4.6 million USDA grant, run by the Eastern Sierra Council of Governments, that funds five years of county-operated chipping, hauling and biomass processing plus home-risk assessments and support for local Fire Safe Councils and Firewise groups.
